Strong Language

Scottish comedian Limmy has some fun with action film clichés in this short (NSFW) sketch from his superb Limmy’s Show. It mixes familiar ideas, like the escalation of insults, with completely unexpected turns like, well, you’ll see. Let’s just say it gives the phrase bad language a new meaning. June, A Countertop Smart Oven, Launches With A $1,495 Price Tag

TechCrunch

What happens when you put a bunch of people who have worked at Apple, GoPro, Path, Google, and so on, in a room and ask them to design an oven?

The answer, apparently, is June: a countertop smart oven that will cost around $1,495 and ship next spring. It’s about the size of a microwave and designed to operate more like a smart device than a typical oven. It sits on your counter and is loaded with all the technology you might expect in a smart home device, from smarter temperature sensors to connectivity with an app on your phone.

Perhaps most notable is its built-in camera that uses deep learning technology to determine what kind of food you are trying to make and then give suggestions based on that. It also comes with a temperature probe that will send alerts to your phone. The typical cooking example Van Horn gave…

TechCrunch

Blendle, a Dutch startup that’s applying a Netflix style marketplace to journalism, has signed up the mainstay of German publishers to its pay-per-article market. It said today that all major newspapers and magazines in the country have announced they will start selling individual stories via its website. The list includes Bild, Die Welt, National, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit to name a few

Blendle launched its service in April 2014 in the Netherlands and now has more than 300,000 registered users, up from 130,000 last October. On the publishers side, it has signed up a total of 18 daily newspapers and 15 weeklies from 14 publishing houses — with two operational markets (Holland and Germany), and English-speaking media in the U.S. next on its hit-list.

The Blendle marketplace works by taking micro-payments from readers to access individual articles. The exact per article cost is set by publishers, while users top up their accounts with a set amount…

Founder Jack Ma Lays Out Alibaba’s US Strategy

Posted on

TechCrunch

Founder and executive chairman Jack Ma said there’s a big opportunity for Alibaba in the United States: “Alibaba was founded in China, but it was created for the world.”

Ma spoke today at The Economic Club of New York, and he made similar points in a new op-ed for The Wall Street Journal (paywall). He said that as Alibaba has grown, and especially after it had the largest IPO over, he’s been constantly asked when Alibaba is coming to the U.S.: “When are you going to compete with Amazon? When are you going to compete with eBay?”

“We show great respect for eBay and Amazon,” he said. “I think the opportunity and the strategy for us is helping small business in America go to China, sell their products to China.”

He went on to note that China’s middle class is now the size of the entire population of the United…

breaking down the breakdownThe reason that we eat is to gather the proteins and nutrients to build and rebuild the body as well as provide energy to do the day to day activities of our little corners of the world. This heavy lifting is done by the digestive system in particular the small and large intestines, collectively “the gut”.

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1081754/human-digestive-system

Inside our guts there are about 5 lbs of flora or microbiota that aid and conduct the breakdown of food after being chewed in the mouth and dissolved in the stomach. There are about 5 TRILLION different bacteria and microorganisms that do this for us, in a mostly symbiotic or pathgenic capacity, although there is an imbalance when there is a high sugar intake. Due to junk/fast/fat food lifestyle, poor farming habits, and aging, this environment and its efficiency declines, resulting in lowered nutrient absorbtion and indigestion. The impact on overall health…
